About

Bean There Coffee Company, South Africa’s first roaster of Certified Fairtrade coffee, strives to make a sustainable difference in the lives of African coffee producers by personally sourcing quality coffee through direct fair trade. Bean There’s single origin coffee is optimally roasted in South Africa and sustains people today and the earth tomorrow.

Direct fair trade means producers receive a fair payment for their coffee through equal engagement, regardless of market fluctuations, which ensures community development, empowerment, and sustainability.

Bean There provides single origin, unblended coffee beans from one country and region.

All coffee beans have an optimal roast: a point within the roasting process where the key coffee elements of aroma, body, acidity, and flavour meet perfectly, resulting in a most desirable, optimal roast.

Bean There has directly sourced the world’s most exclusive coffee which it roasts in small batches. The coffee taste and experience emanates class, distinction, extravagance, and passion.

Every cup of Bean There coffee creates an adventure able to transport the taster to the jungles of risk, the farms of intrigue, the plains of mystery, and the taste of Africa’s coffee heritage.

Tanzania 1kg Coffee Single Origin

When you exist to seek the best, the distance you’re prepared to go to source the earth’s
best coffee knows no bounds. This spirit of adventure takes us to unforgettable places
where we discover incredible coffee.

On the alluring slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro, a hibernating volcano, we met coffee farmers with the warmest hearts. In nutrient-rich soil, they’re able to produce a coffee of extraordinary quality.
We source our coffee from the farmers of the Tarakea Cooperative and pay them directly, ensuring a fair trade that keeps their business sustainable and ours meaningful.

This single origin coffee has a sweet aroma brought to life through a soft lime acidity and smooth hazelnut flavour. This specialty coffee is optimally roasted in South Africa to deliver a taste as rich as the continent it comes from.

TARAKEA COOPERATIVE KILIMANJARO, TANZANIA

The Tarakea Cooperative is situated 105Km North East of Moshi Town, Rombo District, in the Kilimanjaro Region. It was started in 1983 with the aim of assisting small scale farmers from eight villages on the eastern slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro to produce and market their coffee.

Farmers in Tarakea home process their coffee, making sure that only red, ripe cherries are handpicked from the trees and pulped the same day. The coffee is fermented for 18 – 24 hours and then washed and dried on homemade drying tables. The parchment coffee is then delivered to the Cooperative for storage and dry milling.
Bean There began purchasing coffee from Tarakea in 2018 and the Direct Fair Trade premiums from our first few shipments are earmarked for a new cooperative-owned washing station which would be a significant advancement in the processing of the coffee.

The Tarakea Cooperative is a pillar in the local community offering its 2850 members access to farm inputs, subsidized medical cover, and pre-finance for their coffee. Bean There is privileged to work with this exceptional farmer group which is offering significant value for farmers in the Kilimanjaro Region.

Burundi 1kg Coffee Single Origin

When you exist to seek the best, the distance you’re prepared to go to source the earth’s best coffee knows no bounds. This spirit of adventure takes us to incredible places where we discover unforgettable coffee.

Deep in the sweeping hills of northern Burundi, we met the resolute coffee farmers from the Kayanza region. As the first cooperative formed in Burundi, their tenacity in learning and applying new knowledge shines through in their world-class coffee.

We source our coffee from the farmers of the Musema Cooperative and pay them directly, ensuring a fair trade that keeps their business sustainable and ours meaningful.

This single-origin coffee has a gentle honey aroma brought to life with a winey acidity paired with berry chocolate flavour. This specialty coffee is optimally roasted in South Africa to deliver a taste as rich as the continent it comes from.

MUSEMA COOPERATIVE KAYANZA, BURUNDI

The Musema Cooperative is located in the Kayanza province of northern Burundi not far from the town of Ngozi.

Musema was the first cooperative established in Burundi and consists of 250 members who supply cherries to the washing station. It was initially supported by the NGO “Food for the Hungry” which provided farmer support, training, and agricultural education.

Bean There began purchasing coffee from Musema in 2011 and we have seen the demand for this exceptional coffee increase every year since. The cooperative is small but committed to excellence which can be seen in the agronomy training made available to farmers, and the improvements in processing techniques at the washing station, including using Ecopulpers which use less water than conventional pulpers.

We have visited Musema regularly since 2011 and we are encouraged to see the development and growth of the cooperative which has resulted in increased yields, improved quality and increased income to farmers. We currently purchase all the coffee that Musema can produce and although the cooperative has no official certification Bean There is committed to paying a Direct Fair Trade premium to the farmers.
