How irritatingly beautiful!

Has anyone told you lately that you're a gem? It's a nice thing to be called, isn't it? The word evokes all kinds of imagery: colours, sparkles, preciousness... It's interesting to note that no one ever really calls someone a 'pearl'.

But why not? After all, they are also beautiful, elegant, and sophisticated. Maybe it's because - fun fact - pearls are the result of extraordinary irritation. Yep, it's the truth! If a grain of sand enters and irritates an oyster, it coats it in all the weird and wonderful chemicals and substances that make it a pearl. If only us humans could do the same!
