About

Nestled between the mountains some 50km’s from Cape Agulhas and a mere 25km’s across Walker Bay on a clear day – from Hermanus’ Old Harbour – the highest peak you’ll see across the bay is our farm… Constituting the heart of Sondagskloof – a cool climate area – where the average temperature is two degrees Celcius cooler than the rest of the Walker Bay district. Courtesy the naturally challenging topography, our vineyards reap the welcoming benefits of those cool Atlantic Ocean breezes that ultimately deliver an elegant range of European style wines for your enjoyment. The expression of altitude and exposure to the prevailing South Easterly winds initiates the distinctive microclimate bestowing upon Sondagskloof’s Sense of Place. Wine Maker: Wilhelm Pienaar

What is Sondagskloof?

While the cool climatic conditions bring out the natural acidity and high content clay soils offer minerality for our farm to deliver a range of elegant European styled wines.

Who is Sondagskloof?

As the only active wine-producing farm in Sondagskloof we believe Good Earth makes Better Wine and are proud to be Wines of Origin Sondagskloof.

Sheep tells a Real Story

Was it not for these woolly little creatures we wouldn’t have a story to tell … the story of Hermanuspietersfontein, however, is fact not fable. Overberg farmers of the early 1800’s preferred their children to be schooled in Dutch, forerunner of Afrikaans. They paid farm teacher Hermanus Pieters in sheep, which grazed at a spring under the Milkwood trees near the sea. In 1855, long after his passing, the village was founded in his honour, only for the postmaster in 1902 to shorten the name to Hermanus.

150 years later we relived the past by naming our cellar brand Hermanuspietersfontein and decided a sheep should tell our modern day tales. In memory of Hermanus Pieters and the passion of the people of the 1800’s we committed our wine names and labels to be exclusively Afrikaans.

Dreams are weird

They're like your brain's way of saying: you know what the world really needs? Nonsensical story lines that nobody questions and flying cars.

And even though we know they're absolutely bonkers and possess zero relevance whatsoever, we waste no time telling people all about them.

Nobody wants to hear it. You end up sounding like a toddler trying to explain the latest episode of Game of Thrones.

The only dream worth talking about is Martin Luther's. Fact.

Anyhoo, we had a dream we sold out by noon today and spent the rest of our time hanging out with the Red Hot Chili Peppers at Home Affairs. Crazy, huh?
