The History of Winnie-the-Pooh

Winnie-the-Pooh first appeared on the printed page in 1924 in Milne’s book of poetry “When We Were Very Young”, which was followed by a full volume of stories in “Winnie-the-Pooh”, featuring Piglet, Tigger, Eeyore, Kanga, Roo and Owl; all of whom were based on real toys owned by the author’s son, who also featured in the famous stories as Christopher Robin.

You may not know that the original inspiration for Winnie-the-Pooh came from a Black Bear cub who was rescued by a World War 1 soldier, Lieutenant Harry Colebourn who happened upon the bear during a stop-over in White River, Ontario, in 1914. A tracker had killed the bear’s mother but admitted he couldn’t do the same to the small cub, so kept her with the hopes of finding a buyer. Colbourn was that buyer.

“The horse cavalry veterinarian purchased the cuddly cub for $20 and returned to the train with his new pet, which he named “Winnipeg” in tribute to his hometown.”

The bear was soon nicknamed “Winnie” and proved to be a trusty companion.

“Harry trained Winnie with rewards of apples and a mixture of condensed milk and corn syrup. The cub slept under his cot and followed him around like a puppy. When not climbing tent poles or playing with her owner, the gentle bear posed for photographs with soldiers and became the regiment’s mascot.”

When duty called in December 1914, Colebourn took Winnie to the London Zoo, which had just opened a new bear habitat that resembled a mountain landscape. This would be her new home.

“Among the children of London who were smitten with Winnie was a young boy named Christopher Robin Milne who repeatedly begged his father, author A.A. Milne, to take him to the zoo where he fed spoonful’s of condensed milk to the friendly black bear in between big, furry hugs. Christopher Robin grew so fond of the London Zoo’s star attraction that he changed his teddy bear’s name from “Edward” to “Winnie the Pooh,” an amalgamation of the black bear’s name and a moniker he had bestowed upon a swan he used to feed in the mornings.”

If you were ever wondering...

...what provides the inspiration for these write ups, today's your lucky day. You're about to find out.

99% of the time it's the products. Unsurprising. But also so very corporate and predictable. And we hate that. So once in a while we like to draw our creativity from elsewhere, such as:

If E is the most common letter in the English alphabet, why is it so particular? Surely it should've been shaped like an I, just a single straight line? It seems excessive to have to draw the extra three horizontal lines, when really it could've been avoided.

If you know the answer, as in really truly know, please write to us at EisshapedlikeEbecause@onedayonly.co.za

Otherwise enjoy thinking about that too for the next three or so years.
