"Musallah" derives from the word (ṣallā), meaning "to pray" and is widely used to refer to prayer mat.
The use of a prayer mats dates back to over 1000 years ago starting with the Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W), who prayed on a “khumrah”, a mat made of palm fronds. There are many terms used for a prayer rug such as “sajjāda” in Arabic and in Persian “namāzlik.”
