Singles Day gained popularity in China FAST. And that makes sense: if a country has a population of over a billion people, there are bound to be more than a few individuals who have just sort of been third-wheeling it their whole lives.
And then Alibaba struck. They're the biggest online store in the world, and they marketed the heck out of Singles Day. In 24 hours, they sold over US$13.5 billion in goods.
Which proves two things. Single people clearly have more money than couples, and Alibaba have the best marketing team ever.
