Oh, a pen ISN'T the most exciting thing you've ever bought?

Well it should be. And here's why:

As recently as less than 100 years ago, before the pen as you and we know it was invented and mass-produced, do you know the struggle people had to go through just to write sweet romantic letters to their significant other?

They needed to get their Casanova hands on an ostrich feather (or some similar such ink-friendly quill) which entailed the small matter of sneaking up behind an ostrich and nicking a feather while trying to avoid life-threatening injuries.

And if that isn't hard enough, have you any idea of the effort required to source ink? Nothing too serious - just a quick dip in the ocean, the locating and deliberate annoying of an octopus or giant squid, and then the collection of the resultant jet of black ink in an old jam jar.

If that doesn't put the importance of this pen in perspective for you, not much will.
