About

One of South Africa's most spectacular cliff side hotels with breathtaking views over Walker Bay. Wake up to the majestic waves & a breakfast served in The Pavilion Restaurant. Choose to laze by the wind protected pool or take a wander down to the tidal pool on the ocean shore a few mins away. A stay at this Hermanus jewel will remain in your memory for a lifetime. Remember to book dinner at the experiential Origins Restaurant by Peter Tempelhoff of Greenhouse Restaurant, Constantia fame.

About the property

In 1998, Liz McGrath graciously accepted the responsibility of custodian of this majestic hotel, after having garnered international acclaim for her restorations of The Plettenberg and The Cellars-Hohnenort. There was nobody better to oversee the restoration of the oldest hotel in Hermanus, and the second-oldest building in the town.

After a busy eight-month restoration period, The Marine was reopened in October 1998 as a five-star hotel.

Panoramic views over Walker Bay have inspired the sumptuous décor for all rooms of this elegant and unique hotel. It offers one of the finest land-based whale watching opportunities in the world. Scenic ocean views with pods of dolphins and whales are complimented my majestic mountain views in the background. The hotel's exceptional cuisine is overseen by  Relais & Châteaux Grand Chef Peter Templehoff who is also the mastermind behind  the award-winning Greenhouse in Cape Town.

About the Room

The gorgeous Double Rooms offer exceptional décor and uncompromising style as found throughout The Marine Hotel. Some have own private balcony. Double Rooms all feature an en-suite bathroom, under floor heating, air-conditioning throughout and other luxury amenities you've come to expect from The Collection by Liz McGrath properties.

About Origins Restaurant at The Marine

As Peter Tempelhoff says:  "If it's not the best it can be, it shouldn't be on the menu"  At Origins they look back to look forward. Looking back to our beginning: The Khoisan, our First People, to tell a story of our region’s culture, cuisine and ingredients.  Chefs Peter Tempelhoff and Grant Parker search out indigenous and endemic produce, to create menus that explore a history of flavour, in a modern, kitchen-focused restaurant.  Dishes reflect the season, and champion the exciting fresh produce found.  At Origins small plates pays tribute to the social act of sharing. Shoots, Stems & Leaves takes inspiration from the earth; local, seasonal produce delivered as complex, delicious salads. The mains and sides are Hunted and Gathered; each ingredient reflecting our surroundings. Desserts with local flavour bring The Sweetness, and artisanal Cheeses of the Region round out the menu.

About the Area

The Marine is situated on THE CLIFF PATH in hermanuse. It is a most unique path in that where else can you traverse an entire town along its coast?  With its extraordinary diversity of scenery, rocky coves, sandy beaches and secluded forest glades, the Cliff Path is unequalled anywhere.  The conservation value of the coastal area has been recognised by its inclusion in 2000 into the Fernkloof Nature Reserve.  The Cliff Path attracts thousands of whale-watchers every year for the best shore-based whale watching in the world, but not only whale watching may be enjoyed on the Cliff Path - it is also a nature lover's paradise.

Originally constructed by the Hermanus Botanical Society and now maintained by the Cliff Path Management Group and the local municipality, the Cliff Path meanders for almost 12km from the New Harbour in the west to the mouth of the Klein River in the east.  It takes you past famous fishing spots, whale-watching viewpoints, multimillion-rand homes and the original fishing harbour, now a museum and National Monument.  It also winds through a fascinating diversity of vegetation types with an astonishing number of flowering plants to be seen ending with the Piet-se-Bos milkwood forest.

Famous for whale watching, beaches and nature, as well as its food and wine, Hermanus really is a destination that ticks all the boxes: its palpable history, thriving art scene, boutique shopping and busy programme of festivals, concerts and events.

The area around Hermanus, known as the Overberg, is an area of natural contrasts, from the deep green apple orchards of Elgin to the sweeping canola fields of Caledon, and the rugged mountainous coast where marine life flourishes. The natural surroundings are at once diverse, and lovers of the outdoors are spoilt for choice with activities.

Whether you're looking to explore the tastes of the Overberg, immerse yourself in art, history and culture on the coast or play in the Overberg outdoors, an outdoor lover’s dream, there's something to satisfy everyone.

Dreams are weird

They're like your brain's way of saying: you know what the world really needs? Nonsensical story lines that nobody questions and flying cars.

And even though we know they're absolutely bonkers and possess zero relevance whatsoever, we waste no time telling people all about them.

Nobody wants to hear it. You end up sounding like a toddler trying to explain the latest episode of Game of Thrones.

The only dream worth talking about is Martin Luther's. Fact.

Anyhoo, we had a dream we sold out by noon today and spent the rest of our time hanging out with the Red Hot Chili Peppers at Home Affairs. Crazy, huh?
